Alexandria, VA – BayFirst Solutions sponsored the July 25 commissioning of the Coast Guard’s newest 154-foot fast-response cutter, one of 28 ships that are being named after Coast Guard heroes. The latest ship was named for Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal, the first Coast Guardsman to be killed in action since the Vietnam War. BayFirst Principal Kevin Quigley – a 28-year USCG veteran – represented BayFirst at the official ceremony in Alexandria.
“BayFirst is proud of our partnership with the Coast Guard, and we are equally proud of the opportunity to sponsor this next generation cutter that bears such an honorable name,” Quigley said of the ship’s commissioning. “As a cutterman and former commanding officer of two Coast Guard cutters, I am honored to have represented BayFirst Solutions at the commissioning service.”
Bruckenthal was 24 years old the day he and six sailors from the USS Firebolt, a U.S. Navy Cyclone-class coastal patrol boat, attempted to board a small fishing dhow in the Northern Arabian Gulf that was moving too close to an Iraqi oil terminal. As the Coast Guard-Navy team approached the dhow in Firebolt’s small boat, a suicide bomber detonated a large explosive device on the dhow, killing Bruckenthal and two Navy sailors and wounding four other crew members. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously for his heroic actions, which alerted nearby forces to follow on attacks triggered by the initial explosion, thereby preventing further casualties.
It was Bruckenthal’s second deployment to the Persian Gulf, and the day he was killed he had volunteered for a second watch. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
The USCGC Nathan Bruckenthal – whose motto is “Bravery in Battle – will complete its inspections before taking on search-and-rescue, law enforcement, and other missions along the Eastern coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas. The ship’s state-of-the-art capabilities would allow its crew to serve in deep seas where the Coast Guard routinely performs drug interdictions in the Caribbean.
